New in Summer 2006 is YMCA Camp Dudley's return to adventure activities
with the launch of our Backpacking program! Campers will spend four nights
and five days on trail in the beautiful Cascade Mountains. This summer,
we will offer one to two weeks of open enrollment where any eligible camper
can participate, as well as the opportunity for youth organizations to
come as a group!
Youth Groups:
We need you! Our backpacking program is geared towards working with
existing groups to provide an experience you will never forget. Sessions
can
be built with specific goals in mind, or just to challenge your organization
on
a new level. Camp Dudley will also help you with fund raising! Participate
in our candy sale to help raise funds for your group. Be a part of something
that your youth will remember forever!
Common Questions:
Is it safe?
Rest assured parents that YMCA Camp Dudley is committed to
the highest level of safety in
our Backpacking program. Groups will be led by one male and one female
Dudley staffer trained in
Wilderness First Aid. Additionally, each team will carry a GPS unit, satellite
phone, and will be
traveling along a set route. While we cannot control every event that Mother
Nature can throw at us,
we can be as prepared as possible. In addition, our accredidation through
the American Camping
Association assures participants that we follow the ACA's high standards
for backcountry travel and
preparedness.
What do I bring?
Prior to your arrival, Camp Dudley will send you information
about what equipment
campers need to provide. Essentially, campers must bring appropriate clothing,
rain gear, and
appropriate footwear. Specific information on where to purchase clothing,
and brand suggestions will
be included in the informational packet. Camp Dudley will provide backpacks,
food, cooking equipment,
water purification, and water storage.
I've never camped, can I do this?
Yes! Whether this will be your first
true camping trip, or you are a
seasoned outdoor enthusiast, backpacking is for you. Your backpack guides
will help you through each
step from the initial packing, to setting up your tent, and cooking outdoors.
Where do we go?
Specific routes are chosen with the US Forest Service,
and can vary.
How many can go?
Group size is limited, and usually no more than 10 participants
will be in a group.
Campers, check out our 2007 brochure available in March for general
registration dates, Youth Leaders, please contact the Camp Director
to reserve a week of backpacking for your group today!
